Hi all - i was recently reading one of the threads on the forum where one of the memebrs was looking for a certain picture of a car and the response perplexed me - it was along the lines of you should buy the bathurst annuals but some of them are actually more expensive than a 1/18 new release . Maybe i've lost the plot a bit but the thing that i love about this forum is the fact that we help each other out .

I am personally trying to get the whole set but i would feel kinda wierd now asking for help if i need it

It's OK, Mal was just pulling his leg. I've been & had a look, there's not a lot of pics of this car easily found. I might have to go out to the shed & look through my MRAs. It's warm in here though.:o

and I think this might be about the 94 Coke Commodores that I asked for help with. Mal did say to find the annuals, but I think he was just mucking around because he actually sent me about 24 or 25 pics to help me out, which was fantastic. So don't be shy in asking for help. The vast majority of people here will help if they can, and I appreciate it very much

Also i really have only a base load of information so any expertise i can get i find to be a fantastic resource for my code3 projects or interests . I only really came back into my love of motorsport in 2006 when i met up with Brockie at a melbourne shopping centre so i feel i'm still a novice.

Definitely, I don’t recall saying otherwise.

But I know people won’t even bother looking at there reference material after a while.

I'd rather people waited until they had something to say, or ask, than just pipe in with 'I agree' having, copied and pasted a whole post, with pictures!

I have no problem with people just asking for stuff (information, help, whatever) as long as it's for a good cause!

If I can help, I do, if nobody else has already offered. I think we're mostly like that here - this is really a good place.

We should set up a database of who wants which of the Great Race books and who has 'spares'. I have second copies of some years' books, that I'd be willing to sell.

Maybe we should go beyond that and set up a data base of which books full stop people have. For example, I'm just re-reading 'The Unfair Advantage', Mark Donohue's seminal book on his experiences as a racing driver / engineer (and a damned good one).

Stuff that's in these books is often of use to others.

Thoughts?

It is, but I can see lachlan's point as some people join and ask for info, etc but don't contribute back.

And I with a lot of the requests, have pm'd and asked for people's emails so I can scan and email photos for them. Remember that there is the issue of copyright and by copying a photo from a book and posting it on a public forum, you break copyright.

As previously stated, it does get wearing after a while.

You may also want to check the old race photos thread to see who started it and who contributed to it.

Not as such!

As they say in the classics, you can have my yearbooks when you take them from my cold, dead hands!

I only have a few, but I dream of one day completing the set.

This is a really interesting conversation, as I agree with both sides of this argument. One of this forum's strengths is the way it's members go out of their way to help others, however I do (like others) get annoyed when we see ones who only appear to post when they want something. For me, I see it as a two way street, if you want to take, then you also need to give.

Agree totally brchi ive recieved plenty of help from members on here with various things and helped others in return when i can its a 2 way street that makes this forum so good ;)

It's like any community Brad. If you expect to take then you have to be prepared to give as well. ;)

I think so to, if you help someone they should give it back as well, but sometimes theres more give and not getting anything back from it at all and that stinks :( But yes this froum is the best place for help and I hope it says that way ;)

I've had a lot of help from people on this forum finding pictures and info for some of the rarer or more unusual projects that I've done. I always thank them but given some of these peoples knowledge, its hard to give back when they already know most things.

Also how much do you search for something for some one? I've just started collecting the AMR Yearbooks and there are some very interesting pictures in there that have helped me but if you have a large collection of reference material, its very hard to remember where you found a picture. Who would think of looking for a picture of a Colin Bond XU-1 in a 1980s AMR?

So, thanks to the guys who do help out, but I understand when they can't or won't.

A big hit all at once, but at $50 average per book, a lot less than the average RRP for these when they were available!

The problem with these is that many probably turn up at garage sales and school fete's and we will never know about them. Those rare auctions on ebay go for ludicrous prices.

I really don't care about the original item - I would settle for a so called "Collector's Reprint" to fill these holes. Let's hope Chevron Publishing consider doing these in the future - the concept is not new to publishers.

Started collecting these in 2007 with #10 and #13 now being my most wanted. That will take me complete up to 1996. Then the 1997 and 1998 2 litre races are then next on my list. The supercar era books do not concern me too much.

The Bill Tuckey books are my favourites. The writing lost its edge after he left the company but are still a wonderful resource and time capsule of each race.

My Australian Motor Racing Year books has some more sizeable holes in it that seem harder to fill :( (81,89,91,93)

I started collecting theses late last year. I have found a couple here and there.

At this rate It'll be a life long venture to get them all.

I have extras of the 87/88 race, and books number 16 and 27.

I also have an extra of the original Bill Tuckey 'Australia's Greatest Motor Race.'

I have gaps too and I'd be willing to swap to fill them - I need 9, 10, 11, 17 and 18.

It never fails to amaze me the price some of these go for on Ebay, couple of examples below that finished last night.

1990

1995

Have seen the 95 version go for way more than this.
