Hi Guys

We are looking at buying another car (1:1) and have seen a few cheaper ones in Brisbane, compared to Sydney. Someone mentioned that if I did this I have to re-register it in NSW (new plates) as it will be mainly driven in NSW not QLD.

Can someone clarify this for me, is this correct, and if so how much to do it.

Thanks
Kiwiracing

I would think you just get to drive it until the rego runs out, then re-register as per usual here in NSW. Hand in the plates and get new ones.....

if the car has QLD plates then you would have to hand them in and get NSW plates when you re-registered it...

you have to have a valid living address to register a car so unless you have a fake license showing a QLD address you will have to re-regiter it in NSW.. but you can use the QLD rego until it runs out....

cost of the plates... from memory in NSW its about the 22-25 bucks....

apart from that its whatever the rego costs you....

Kiwiracing you only have 1 month in which to transfer once you bring the car permanently into N.S.W,be careful with that because if you dont it can cause insurance problems.in relation to your green slip.

You have to get a Blue slip, which is a far more thorough inspection and costs a lot more too.

Remember QLD cars dont have a annual roadworthys, like down here,so the kilometers arent registered every year, and they are not forced to repair any faults so buyer beware if you dont know its history.

I don't know if NSW has an open website like Victoria's VicRoads but if they do, you should be able to find out all you need to know there, otherwise, hang on till Monday, and ring NSW Roads, or whatever they call themselves, and they will tell you all you need to know.

Give 'em a call and set aside about 3 hours while your on hold if they're anything like Vicroads;)

and N.S.W has the highest rate of fake roadworthys in the country. so dont be fooled into believing that its a good/roadworthy car just because it has a piece of paper to say so!

Is that renew or Rereg?

Strewth, if you had to do that in Vic, up until recently, you'd have replace your windscreen every year, good money spinner!

BOTH...

you cant get or renew registration on your car in NSW without a

green slip : third party personal insurance

blue slip : roadworthy..

you have to have your car roadworthied every 12 months to pay your registration..

very expesive.. cos of the separate third party insurance the insurance companies charge like a wounded bull... I had to pay over 500 bucks just for that when I lived there.... then there was 200 for the rego and 40 for the roadworthy (plus repairs which I didnt need thank christ)

btw.. I might have the colours mixed up.....

If your bringing in the car to NSW from any other state and it going to be here longer than 3months it will have to be re-registed in NSW and that means a full pit inspection, not a rego check inspection.

The police tend to get a bit narky down here when you have a NSW address and own a interstate car.

And no you arent allowed to drive it around till the current interstate rego is finished, if the car is to driven mainly in NSW it has to changed over straight away it the LAW here.

Here in the West, the rules are a little more relaxed,
What is the situation with older (TOY,Hobby) cars like XY or MONARO's of old?
It must be that there are a fair few sitting in sheds/garages unrego'd at the Eastcoast, as here there are some serious dangerous bombs driving arround due to the noninspection situation.

yes you need a blue slip as already mentioned
and blue slip inspectors, are just like pink slip ones.
i.e some are very easy, and some are harder & strick.
they seem to look for smaller less obivous things on these inspections. frayed seatblets(the smallest of frays will do it)
hair line cracks on floor pans around seat mountings
rust
all major suspension points, bushes pins etc.
its just a matter of finding the right person, i've never had a problem with blue slips, just make sure everything works first, they seem to get pee off when they first chek your lights & you have a parklight out, not off to a good start.
and make sure your cars clean.

That has changed then cos when I moved from QLD to NSW I continued to drive my car on a QLD rego with a NSW addy and license without a problem for 5 months (until the rego from QLD ran out).... I even asked the RTA and cops in NSW if it was ok and was told there was no problem..

that was in 2000 though so things probably have been changed.

if its a toy/hobby car and isnt roadworthy it wont be registered unfortunately...

but it also means that you can see some awesome looking and well kept older machines on the roads over there too....
