Mick, Nothing in this issue about the Torana Nationals....

Are you saying that they didn't even have a write up on an old Torana like usual, disapointing, but the is more to the issue than just that that makes it good.

Frosty, Thanks for that it must be in the next issue as there were Two Brock A9X Torana's one was the Bathurst 78 winner, the Brock & Sampson 74 L34 all in that controversial paint scheme.

A pair of the 72 Torana XU1 Bathurst cars 28c & 24c, Bob Morris Torana championship winning hatchback + all those genuine XU1, L34, SLR-5000,A9X four door & Hatchbacks some mighty fine cars indeed.

And the great man Harry Firth what a legend, as well as Mark Oastler who both are fantastic to talk to so I am sure this will be well covered.

Can you guys stop it please?!?!?;)

I been salivating since reading this post yesterday, and was hanging out to get hold of this issue, but as we had a public holiday over here (tough luck you guys in Vic) there were no newsagents open - so as I had the day off today I did the rounds of the newsagents (and model shops) and it hasn't made it over here yet!!!

At least we've got Biante HQ just around the corner... :)

Good to hear that the magazine is looking after it's subscribers - any magazine I've ever subscribed to generally gets to me 2 -3 days after appearing in the newsagents - my V8X only arrived to me today, but I saw it on the newstand Wednesday last week!

Those of you who have got the mag...... did you see the add towards the front for the auction of Alan Moffat racings number 2 XC from the famous 1977 1-2 victory? Suggested price range was $75,000 to $120,000!

Hi Sandy - no the Cobra isn't MOTd yet, but it's on the "to do" list.

The picture shows an XB, but the add says its an XC.

Moffat had No1 in 1977 not No2.

To me it looks like the 1977 ATCC XB which Bond drove.

I would love to buy it !

Did anyone notice one one of the pages, cant remember the one, that Doug Chivas died a few weeks ago.
I am pretty sure thats who it was, but cant be for sure cause I dont have the mag with me.

It has a pic of him pushing a torana into the pits with Peter Brock egging him on.

The Atcc winner was the XB edition, and they put some XC updated on the XB ,painted it and voila there is an XC.
You will find that some of the cars that were originally XA"s ended up being repaneled to XC.
This has been going on in the years since.
VPCommodore ending upas a much later model race car, just by swapping skin panels etc. Mainly to keep the sponsors happy.
You can make a BA out of a AU I have been told.

Out of interest, in the letters page did anyone write in to refute the ridiculous letter in the previous issue, where some bloke reckoned Brock broke the lap record in the '79 Bathurst on the last lap because he was desperate to impress Allan Moffat? Like some little kid, rather than to show him the superiority of the Torana after the Falcons had broken again.

But Brock himself admits that was his motivation - look at the interview with him on the "Holden at Bathurst" video (it's not called that but there is one).

He says he knew that AM was doing the TV commentary and he wanted to thumb his nose at his great rival. Pretty silly to risk the car like that if you ask me, but nobody did!

Your spot on Moxo, he has mention this in quite a few interviews

There's a difference between thumbing your nose at a rival (note - "rival", not "master") and the way the letter-writer put it which was that he was desperate to impress Moffat. Brock said that he knew Moffat would be saying that Brock would be hearing noises from the car on the final laps etc, and wanting to nurse the car, but Brock was having no problems with the A9X and blasted round the circuit to show Moffat. Brock wasn't some rookie, begging for attention from Moffat - he was a proven Bathurst winner and driving the best car. And he was rubbing Moffat's nose in it rather than hoping to impress.

I agree with Nick. I almost thought about writing in and saying something, but I couldn't be stuffed starting a s***fight. Brock had a far better car. Now think of it this way. The A9X is probably Holdens best car they have pitted at Bathurst, which has been based on the road car to a large degree. The only thing that I disagree with with Brock is doing most of the race and letting Richo do minimum laps. Bit selfish that, but who wants to see a leader who just coasts down the mountain and don't put in any effort for the last 1/4 (Or in Brocks case, most of the race) of the race.

Hell, if he had made a mistake, it would have been on him :D .

The A9X was-is the best car that Holden ever put on the starting grid at Bathurst. It stopped the Might of the FORD COUPE's
Good on yae Peter Brock to show the real speed and to take the risk as this is racing as in sport.
If you ever have the chance to see one of thse machines at the Historic meetings driven by Stubber/Harvey, enjoy the spectackle.
These cars are Ballbusters, I like them!:)

From what I remember Brock tried to break the lap record on the last lap in 1978 but got held up by a Dolomite at the esses.
He got it done in 1979 though. The Moffat thing is just a little 'window dressing'.

Nick Short
05-05-2004, 11:33 PM
Although being held up by a Dolomite is not unusual (while it was lunching its appallingly-engineered engine or something) it was actually an Alfa that held him up. So he had a second bash the following year and got a clean run at it.

Back in those days, the co-driver was just that, somebody who kept the car circulating while one went to the toilet, changed clothes, had a bite to eat etc...

There was one co-driver in the early 70's who used to do just one lap in the middle of the race, while the driver went to the loo...

Up until relatively recently, co-drivers weren't even recognised as Bathurst winners!

I think it was Johnson and Bowe in the mid 80's who pioneered the idea of two top drivers doing half the race each...(somebody correct me if this is wrong)

Not selfish at all, just the done thing back then.

Cheers

Bruce McPhee in 1968 drove all laps bar one or something silly like that didn't he?
On the topic of the two top drivers in a car thing it is quite hard to determine. It all depends on your definition of a 'top driver'.
I would have to rate John Goss/Kevin Bartlett as a top pairing in 1974 and Moffat/Geoghan couldn't be sneezed at either. To muddy the waters further where would you class Jacky Ickx? To not class him as a 'top driver' would be an absolute insult in my book as the man is VERY close to the greatest racing driver of all time in my opinion.

Correct. McPhee drove every lap in 1968, except for one where he handed over to Barry Mulholland. Back in the day, the only rule was that each driver had to complete at least one lap, and McPhee exploited that particular rule several times IIRC, each time with Mulholland as co-driver. Almost certain he did this in 1967 and 1969, and went solo from 1970-1972.

Nick Short

Wayno, Ickx must be the driver who has been successful at the top flight in more different types of motorsport. Ferrari F1 driver, most wins at Le Mans, Can Am champion, Paris-Dakar, Bathurst win etc etc. Don't think he did it on 2 wheels though, but not bad otherwise!

And yet everyone's heard of John Surtees, who was world champ in F1 and bikes. And my mate keeps going on about Senna and Schumacher being quite good when they've unofficially tried other forms of motor sport. But Ickx was 2nd in the F1 world championship twice (I think) and effortlessly won Le Mans, plus combining F1, Can Am, rallying and touring cars in the same year (he can never have had a weekend off!). And maybe because he's quite retiring he hasn't had the publicity that gets the attention of motorsport "fans" (who so often only stick with F1)....

wayno
07-05-2004, 05:28 PM
I think he could have easily been a world champ, but after reading quite a few interviews with him I don't think this was ever really his main focus.

I was in the same boat, discovered this great mag fairly late in the piece.

When I tried to get back issues from Chevron they were all sold out of issues 1 thru 6, but due to demand had reprinted issues 1 to 4 (but at a premium price - $20 each from memory). At that stage they hadn't made a decision about issues 5 & 6.

I have since got hold of a copy of issue 6 (and every issue after that), but issue 5 still eludes me...so if anyone has one they no longer require and would like to see it go to a loving home...Sorry I didn't reply with the intention of placing a wanted ad - I did actually place a request in buy/sell/swap before it went belly-up!

Issue 1 has "cheap road-going Bathurst cars", ie L34, XR GT, XB GT, HK Monaro GTS, XE Fairmont Ghia ESP and Brock VC Commodore; plus VL SS Walkinshaw test and history, XD Tru Blu studio shots, DJ interview and history, and full report on the '77 Bathurst, including long Moffat interview. Issue 5 features the Phase IV GTHO (big 22 page article!). I would have thought $20 was cheap! Failing that, you could try eBay, but I expect prices there might be that high as well.

Well I've been on the seach for a few back issues of AMC & I've been able to find most of them. Except for issue #5.

Apparently Chevron have re-published issues 1to4 & are selling them for $20ea or all 4 for $72

They did have issues 7&9 which were for sale for $6.95 - (cover price).

I then managed to find issues 6&8 at emags NZ (http://www.emags.nz.co)

So you guys looking for them, they are out there, it's just a bit of work finding them.

I'm so glad I got tipped off about Issue 1 by chance, by a mate in Adelaide! It would have driven me spare to try and find back issues from over here! AMC still stands apart from virtually every other car magazine (and not just in Oz) in terms of quality of presentation, wealth of archive material, original interviews and obvious obsession with the subject matter, giving a depth of information that could satisfy even the hardened anoraks amongst us!

A guy at work here who missed the first 5 bought them as a reprint and thats what they say on the front cover.

It stops all those fools on ebay from making a quick buck flogging them off as originals.

Woo hoo! Just managed to get hold of the elusive missing issue #5 to now complete the set.

Had to ring Chevron about an unrelated matter last week and while I had them on the phone I casually enquired about the chance of a reprint. The lady I was dealing with said "funny you should mention that, we've just done a stocktake and found an extra copy" I don't think I gave her a chance to finish the sentence before screaming "I'll take it!!!" She did say however that it was definitely the last one they had though.

She also mentioned it wasn't in the best of nick, but I told her I didn't care. It arrived today and it's in absolutely mint condition!

Made my day :D

Bert, as far as I'm aware you can still obtain the reprints of issues 1 - 4 direct from Chevron - but unfortunately, because of the distribution rights to Australian mags being held by big companies like Gordon & Gotch and Newsagents Direct and the like, we aren't able to get hold of them as we are not a newsagent, and they won't deal with us.

As mags like Diecast Downunder aren't distributed throught the newsagent network, and therefore don't come under G&G and ND control, we can get hold of it, but that's the only Aussie mag that we are able to stock. The rest of the mags that we carry - like Motorsport for you - we airfreight directly from the UK ourselves.

So you may have to go direct to Chevron. When I got my back issues I had hoped that because we customers of Chevron that I might be able to get them for a better price but, alas, I still had to pay $20 per issue. Oh well, them's the breaks! :( At least I got my copies - that was the main thing.

With regards to issue #5, it was purely a fluke and a case of being in the right place at the right time, as they had literally just uncovered one spare original issue that day, but like I said the lady I dealt with was adamant that was the last one...:(

Bert, I ordered the first 4 editions from Chevron (just after I posted the details earlier in this thread) & got them Thursday.

Yes, they do have collectors reprint on them, but it's whats inside them that matters, so I really didn't give two hoots about it.

About issue #5, I'm sure if there is enought people out there who are asking for it, they'll give it another run at the printers.
