I am discovering the joy of trying to fill in gaps in a collection , Schumi 1/18th cars are very expensive . Dont mind paying for Exoto cars but am blanching at some of the prices for cars like the B193, can't believe I used to ignore these cars when I was wandering the model shops years ago , course now I have the money but can't find the cars .

A note for all the collectors who are just starting , try to get the cars you are missing early in the piece, I am not making the same mistake twice and have made sure I have at least one of every BIANTE car and all the Exoto Ferraris spending money now will save a heap later on.

Regards Oz

Looking forward to the Clipsal on the love child of the best street circuit ever.

collecting ,full stop is all about endurance and doing it for a substantial periot of time .
You start small and it grows from there
I know of a very nice and well cashed up collector who is trying to achieve in 3 years what some of us have collected in 15 or twenty years ,it is costing him lots and complaines a little bit about it (very understandable) but his collection is getting very inpressive
All of this makes one wonder what the value needs to be to replace it in case of loss (insurance) and how to prove it to the insurancecompany ,who like to get your premium but loathe to pay out ,and where oh where to get new exact the same gear??,in case they pay up
Hopefully it will never happen!!

As one who has been in the insurance industry for twenty years I never cease to be amazed by the number of illinformed comments that are made about non-payment on insurance claims. I can assure our fellow forum members that there are many more satisfied claimants than the other. Problem is the current affairs programmes are not interested in them. I wonder just how many millions have been paid in NSW for just the past year!!
In regards to the issue of how much you would be paid on a claim I firstly suggest you talk to your agent so that you may ensure you do have the correct coverage.
Secondly Make sure that you are providing the insurer with the correct information to assess the risk. In other words, have you ever thought of having your "valuable collection" valued? If you have not I guess you can't value it very highly.
Thirdly. Are you prepared to pay someone to value your collection? As one who performs this role I can assure you it is an extremely time consuming excercise.
Thirdly. Are you prepared to pay the price to insure it properly?
Fourthly. When someone offers you that elusive model at a price that is "too good to be true" are you going to query as to whether or not it was gained honestly?
Finally. Have you taken all precautions to ensure your collection is not only harder to steal but also harder to dispose of. Is it under lock and key?
Is it properly catalogued?
Are the certificates stored securely elsewhere?
Do you have great pride in boasting at the pub as to how much it is worth?
Do you have photos or even better still, video of the collection?
I am sorry this has turned into a novel but if it assists just one of you, great.

Incidentally, I have just noted I am listed as a "junior member". I can assure you I am no junior.

Wils, as far as the Forum goes you are a "Junior" until you have posted a certain number of entries.

You are right..its a lot what people pay for the early MS F1 cars..
he is very trendy at the moment in germany...im always having a look at ebay to see how the prices go high for these cars..but you get nearly every car he has driven...they are all still available(not in the shops of course) but you have to have a big wallet....
im not very interested in his cars(i don t even like himself) but
the quality of those models isn t very impressing...i think the latest ones
are much better like the Brabham BT52 and the Benetton BMW....
im going to move to australia later this year...i have to check if they charge me fees for my model car collection(which would suck!!!)if not i could offer to bring you any model of MS..just let me know...

collecting is only good if you still have to chaser something

Smarty Marty , cheers for the offer, I am missing the early MS Ferraris and two Bennetons , I despair of ever getting a 1/18th B193 for sensible money and keep look out for the other cars when I can . they all seem to pop up on E-bay regularly but I am hoping to be able to find the cars in AUS , as I expect the purchase will be easier as I have never used Ebay. Is there any advantage to buying the cars in Germany ?, should I book a flight? I will get my wife to talk to the customs people at Adelaide airport as she works there and try and find out if you will be charged anything for your collection . My gut feeling based on many years of dealing with customs is that as the items are not new and are your personal property that you will not face any import duties or taxes on your car collection , so you should be ok but I will confirm it for you.

where are you moving to in AUS ?

Thanks for your help OZ...i dont know what price you pay for the early MS cars in Australia..i guess a bit more than here...but they are still pretty expensive in Germany...I ll keep an eye on them and if you want i can get the cars you like....just let me know what price you are willing to pay and I ll see what i can do.
The prices arent very much different but i think the supply(?) is bigger...in Oz for example you can get the UT cars a lot cheaper than over here....Exoto is a bit cheaper in germany cos you get special offers sometimes(not the new ones) Do you get CMC cars in Oz? This are wonderful modelcars of the early silver arrows and Auto Union pre war racing cars.....you can get them for a good price over here too.
Umm..how can i prove that the models i bring with me aren t new?
Make some scratches on them..break off a wheel? Some of my models are still mint boxed cos my display cabinets are full....(yes i m one of the guys who hides his models in his cupboard  )but i m running out of space....
Well im going to move to Geelong...and i cant wait :D
