Well now it's offical, the postponed China round will be held at Symmons Planes.

below is the offical press release that I was sent from Racetime.

Tasmanian Deal Takes V8 Supercar Championship Series National Again
Australia's premier Motorsport category and third most popular sport is national again following a deal with the Tasmanian Government to race at Symmons Plains for the next five years.

Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon and Australian Vee Eight Supercar Company (AVESCO) Chairman Tony Cochrane announced the signing of a heads of agreement in Hobart today. AVESCO Events is the official promoter of the event.

"This is a fantastic coup for the state - one I'm sure will be welcomed by Tasmanians who are passionate about their Motorsport," Mr Lennon said.

"It will also generate unprecendented exposure for Tasmania, given that each event in the series is televised live to 500 million people in 70 countries.

"Tasmania will truly be on show to the world."

Mr Cochrane said Tasmania's inclusion in the series was a boon for the sport.

"We know it's going to be a tremendous weekend of racing as it's no secret how big the fane base is in this state," he said.

"We are once again a truly national series that visits every state in Australia. Tasmania has been a lost link since we were last here in 1999 but not any more."

The Symmons Plains circuit was chosen ahead of Phillip Island as the venue to replace Shanghai as the venue for Round 12 in this year's championship series. Round 12 of the 2004 series was scheduled for China until delays meant the race had to be postponed until next June.

As it turned out, the rescheduling of Round 12 proved a tremendous boon for the V8 Supercar Championship Series and Tasmania. So good was the proposal from the Tasmanian Government and Tasmanian Events that a deal was reached to return to the venue for five years.

Under the terms of the agreement upwards of $2 million will be spent on upgrading facilities at Symmons Plains. It has been five years since the V8 Supercar Championship has raced at the track.

Current V8 Supercar champion Marcos Ambrose is a born and bred Tasmanian. He was ecstatic about being able to return to his home state and race.

"It's an absolute dream for me," Ambrose said.

"To race with the No.1 on the side of my car at my home track is incredible. I'm a very proud Tasmanian and I'm going to enjoy every moment of it."

Symmons Plains is a 2.4km circuit located 30 minutes to the south of Launceston. It is a 170km trip from Hobart meaning people can travel to and from the capital in a day to take in the race action.

The permanent facility has been a Tasmanian icon for 44 years. It is a fast circuit with a long sweeping back straight where V8 Supercars can be expected to reach speeds of around 300 km/h.

"It's a circuit that is very conducive to tight racing," Ambrose said. "It has good straight and good braking corners that makes for a spectacular event."

The last winner of a V8 Supercar championship round at Symmons Plains was Mark Skaife in 1999.

Names such as Bob Jane, Allan Moffatt, Norm Beechey, Ian Geoghegan, Jim McKeown, John Harvey, Peter Brock, Colin Bond, Allan Grice, Jim Richards, Alan Jones, Larry Perkins, Glenn Seton, John Bowe and Mark Skaife have all raced at Symmons Plains.

cheers. :)

Way to go Tassie.

Even though PI is a better circuit to drive on, the racing there in the last few years has been like a procession.

I'm happy about it, HRT have dominated there :D Although, same could have been said about Adelaide until this year :(

If this is a 5 year deal what track/round will be dropped in 2005 to allow for a round in Tassie.

Round to be dropped next year for China...either Oran Park or Queensland Raceway...worst case scenario sees one of the two rounds at EC...

But I'd up-the-ante to what rounds will be dropped...

Originally from here (http://www.v8supercar.com.au/news/latestnews/news display.asp?Ind=M&gid=10702)
There are also plans to add Singapore and Dubai, plus a second race in New Zealand, to the racing schedule in future years.

So that's 4 rounds that need to be found...

Cheers

Drop Eastern Creek but NOT Oran Park... Great track to watch the races! 1000x better than Eastern Creek.

Well done to Tassie - be interesting to see how quickly work starts...

Maybe they will have more rounds in future, like F1 is doing.

I can't see a round in Singapore happening. Their is little motorport history here nor much marketing value to gain from it I wouldn't thought.

Sepang or Shah Alam in Malaysia would be awsome though. Sepang in particular is desperate for any motorport activity it can get

Well, just saw the news and it sounds like they are going to put a lot of money into Symmons Plains. 32 new pit garages and other adjustments. Can't wait. :)

Well they have to. The joint was always a dump even when we used to go there. Great to see the plans are long term to keep them down there.

Fantastic news,,,, at least us less fortunate collectors will now be able to chase those much wanted signatures... I'll be keeping an eye on ticket information,,, will certainly be jumping on it as soon as available.... as JB said on news,,,, they used to get 30 000 there in the good days,,, something tells me that this might get broken..:D

At least in November the weather should be favourable...;)

This really is great news for us down here! I can't wait.
Symmons is no Phillip Island but at least we can get in a car and go to a round now. Already looked at my work roster and I'm working nightshift all that weekend of course, I' think I will have to get me out of that somehow.
I also hope the Procar series is still coming so I can see and hear those awesome 7 litre Monaro's again.
I really do hope that PI gets a round back as well, as it really is an awesome track, second only to Bathurst in my opinion.

Cheers, Jason :D

Absolutely over the moon over the news......... did the obligatorey handstand at work today but baulked at committing to running naked down Lonny main mall on Saturday morn :)
I truly thought this was gone forever. Finally a the gov has decided to commit $ to building decent facilities at the plains. This decision will help motorsport right down to grassroots club level in Tas and maybe another young MA or JB will come up without having to go overseas to prove their worth. As a good example a young David Parsons got his chance to step up to the big time because of a good showing at the plains years ago, so it can happen. My tip for for who will be victorious in NOV.......Symmons is a horsepower and brakes circuit so I would expect the Stone brothers team to be strong... so Marcus is my tip, coming from a one eyed Holden supporter and proud and VERY happy Tasmanian.
big cheers

HRT haven't lost a round there since '96 or earlier, fingers crossed :D

Leigh, thanks for the link. You can read a lot or a little into that news article, I guess time will tell if they do sell off Oran Park and make it into housing. Be interesting to see the plans for this so called new "city" they intend on building out there. Might have to start saving some pennies for a block out there if it does come about.

Bring back a V8 supercar race to Canberra!!!

Canberra Govt is currently focussed on helping develop a bloody Drag strip! Canberra needs a professional Racetrack - Motor Race complex not just a bloody Drag Strip!!!

Rather see V8 supercar racing in every Australian State and Territory before moving onto NZ or China etc.

Tasmania hold onto it, support it don't let Tony Cochrane take it away!!!

It's about $ & votes. The V8 Race was losing poeple & $ every year & was very unpopular in the actual area - Parkes & Barton - & the "Track" was crap. The Dragstrip (don't read in that I like drags here, I don't) is about Votes, pure & simple. There's an election on this year. All those bumper stickers read: "I will VOTE for a Dragway".

Oh, Congrats to Tassie. Symmons, isn't that the one with the really tight LH Hairpin?

That's the one Steve :D And we are pretty pleased about it to say the least, As Black Betty said I definetly thought it was lost forever from our State.
