View Full Version : can dust ruin your models?

As I don't own a glass fronted display, my collection is simply displayed on black glass shelves along the wall, which looks nice but unfortunately collects alot of dust. Can dust at all damage the quality of models in the long run? Also, I use a 100% cotton cloth to clean my cars - I don't notice any scratches arising from this, but would also like to know if this indeed does scratch the surface, even if very subtle.

A lot of these cars have open windows so be more worried about dust getting into the interiors.
I wouldn't even think of displaying open wheel cars like this (why mine are still all in boxes :( )

Gillick,

long term, dust will damge your paintwork as the main component of dust is human skin and thus has a fairly high oil content.

I have some old cars that I had unprotected for years and the dust becomes ingrained into the paintwork.
Also as Wayno mentioned, once a considerable amount of dust gets into the interior, it is very hard to get out.

My very first die-cast model I collected back in 1986 is the Matchbox 1:18 Shelby Cobra.

I had it displayed for a number of years out in the open, and it did suffer from plenty of accumulated dust etc.

When I finally cleaned it, I used the little cotton buds that people generally clean their ears with.

It took me about 3 hours of patient rubbing and wiping to get the model clean, this included the interior.

My advice is yes, the dust can affect a model, and it is much better for them if they are stored behind glass.

If the model is waxed, as mine was you won't have too many problems cleaning it, but if it isn't you will end up with all sorts of damage.....

Good Luck!

Ed :)

Compressed air will get rid of a lot, but be carefull with decals etc!

I have a large showroom on top of my computer desk. It has got front and side walls made out of Lego, no back wall (that is compensated by the wood from the desk rising about an inch above the shelf). What do you think the long term effects of that would be?

He's added several nonsense 2 word posts tonight, mostly to old threads, so I've just reported him as nuisance value.
You can opt to be "invisible" on the forum. Post & everything, just not be "seen".
