I want to what are thoughts of this publicity stunt. For ppl who don't know on sunday 27 feb between 8-8:30 am the Sydney harbour bridge is closed to let webber drive his williams f1 over it. It sounds absolutely fantastic and will spark media frenzy behind webber. What a patriotic way to do it as well.

Great publicity. I just hope Mark has enough time to himself to prepare himself properly for the race.

He'll probably need some assistance at the toll gate - it could be a bit tricky fumbling for change in a F1 car !

For those interested (and who wouldn't be) channel 10, the home of motorsport, will be telecasting Webber's historic drive live.

For those of you in Sydney, I'd be getting down there early as I suspect it will be huge !!!

cheers. :)

I dont know for sure but I'm quite positive they have to stick to the speed limits. I'm sure it will be the same for when they hit the streets in Melbourne. I think I read somewhere a while ago if they wanted to go quicker they would have to go through Parliament and change the laws/get a permit or something like that.

I would have thought as in london, that being on closed roads it wouldnt matter. If the police/government close the roads for a purpose then they could deciede what speeds were allowed on those roads.

But who know's with pollies, might be a stunt to give Mark Webber a speeding ticket after his outburst over speed camera's last year. :p

Would be a hell of a last thing to hear though!
I've had 10 years on the start line photographing Top Fuel at the drags with no ear plugs and no ill effects. My eyesight is fine! :D

According to last week's AA there's also Grand Prix Festival in Berwick on the evening on Tuesday March 1, so that might be a bit closer to home for you if time permits.

"Cars on display will include V8 Supercars and classic racing cars with the main attraction being the current Formula One cars from Williams, Minardi and McLaren, along with the famous Repco Brabham that carried Jack Brabham to his third World Championship.

The Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Pandazopoulos has said he would like to attend as has Paul Stoddart with one of his drivers. Jason Bargwanna, who lives locally, will be there with his V8 Supercar Ford Falcon.

The grid girl competition will have its final selection take place on centre stage, after a two-week elimination process"

Interesting comments from Frank Williams

With the start of the 2005 Formula One season just a matter of weeks away, Frank Williams has admitted that the new BMW Williams FW27 doesn't yet have the pace to take fight to Ferrari in the battle for the championship.

Speaking ahead of the new season, Williams said he believed that McLaren and Renault would start 2005 as the main challengers to the World Champions, but was confident that his own team would soon be fighting at the front.

"We're starting a little behind them [the teams main rivals], again," he told Reuters. "But I think we've now got the means, the assets to really make some very rapid recovery. Not tomorrow morning, but over the next few months."

"I don't think that we'll be on the front two rows [in Melbourne], but we might be. Everyone's sandbagging a little bit."

Director of engineering Patrick Head also admitted that the team was not expecting to challenge right from the start of the year, and added that new driver Mark Webber was 'disappointed' by the early performance of the new machine.

"He [Webber] is clearly disappointed with the performance of the car," Head said. "He realises that the basic car is potentially good but that aerodynamically it is in need of some more downforce.

"He's obviously disappointed by that and knocked back a bit. I've had a few telephone calls from him and he's not disguising his disappointment.

"But for me to say to him 'Oh don't worry Mark it'll be alright on the day' is not my style. I've told him exactly what we're doing but I'm not going to predict that by Malaysia we'll be front row or whatever because I think it'll take a little bit longer than that."

Yet Mark was fastest in testing today. The cars will be on track in just over a week and all will start to be revealed!

This is the Berwick Shopping Centre Chamber of Commerce and the Casey City Council at their finest.

You may remember Casey wanted to build a monorail tourist attraction, change the name of a country road to be a Boulevard, and most recently, they are the ones that were on A Current Affair demanding to be paid a salary for their voluntary positions as councillors!!!

Berwick is around 45 km South East of Melbourne.

Whereabouts in Berwick is this happening?I 'm less than 30 mins away!!

Wayne,

The circuit goes from the Arts Centre, straight up St Kilda, right onto flinders st, left onto Russell, left into Collins, Left into Swanston and back to the Arts Centre...

Not sure if this is the correct start/finish, nor if the direction is correct, but you can see where they are going.

I don't know whether to stand on the elevated Fed Square (where you'd see them going both ways and would see them fang around the hairpin), somewhere on Russell where (if I've got my direction right) they'd be under load going up the hill, or near the corner of Collins and Swanston where they'd be going as quick as they're allowed before the corner...

Cheers

They'll be closing High St to through traffic between 7pm and 11pm.

High St is the main st in Berwick (the old Princes Hwy) between Clyde Rd and the roundabout (map (http://whereis.com.au/whereis/mapping/geocodeAddr ess.do?advertiserId=&streetNumber=&streetName=patern&poiType=&suburb=berwick&state=Victoria&x=38&y=4)).

I've checked the direction and I got it wrong...

Cars will be going in a clockwise direction, so straight up St Kilda Rd/Swanston st, right into Collins, Right into Russel, right into Flinders, then left back into St Kilda Rd.

Apparently the hairpin is a Controlled turn:cool:

They are also setting up cross over bridges, so pedestrians can go from inside to outside the course.

Which forum mebers went down to see it live this morning?
I got down at 6:30, arounf 7 the crowd started coming.
The car really sounded nicer, when he went faster and faster.
Webber had a interview on the stage and then signed autographs.
He moving real quick so I didn't get all my thing signed
Then he was busy doing TV interviews and went into the hotel.
After 2 hrs of waiting outside, Mark finally appeared with me the only one left outside waiting, and he thanked me for waiting saying I was really loyal :D .
He signed the rest of my thing, got a photo and had a nice chat with him.
Then Webber took off in his LHD BMW M5 off to the airport for the Aus Motorsport awards.
Amazingly on my way back to the station, David Campese was outside his shop, and I got him to sign on the same picture Mark Webber just had minutes ago (Chapter 9, "The Sound and the Fury").
Now that was a nice day.
The moral of the story is if you wait long enough for something, you will get well rewarded.
