View Full Version : Commodore Racing Team
I recently won 2 Matchbox Commodores on ebay that were originally withdrawn from sale as Matchbox did not have authority from Holden to use the Holden emblem on the car.
I've seen a few of these pop up on auction sites.
Does anyone know anything more about the background to this model and how many were actually sold before they were withdrawn?

ok...there were around 1500 of these models before matchbox withdrew them from sale. most of them were originally sold at safeway (or woolworths for those of you interstate or in the country). the only 'problem' with this model is the actual holden symbol on the bonnet of the vehicle. the actual vehicle shape is ok and has been used time and time again.
they fetch around $20.00-$30.00 at ebay. they dont often come up for auction at ebay but when they do they are quite sought after. good tip - pick up as many as you can, cuz collectors are now realizing that they are worth something.
I've actually got six and i am always on the look out for more!!!

matchbox have basically one Holden Commodore (VR/VS) which they have released with several paint jobs.
I have every single matchbox and hotwheels commodore (and falcon for that matter) released by these two manufacturers.
of course there were variations which specialized companies made (under license from matchbox and hotwheels) to promote their own product, such as mitre 10 or the Australian Tennis Open. Even in this situation i have either got (or seen) these variations as well.
Below is a list of all the standard Australian Holden and Ford Matchbox released. The number on the left indicates either the box number or the actual car number printed on the side of the car.
27 Ford Falcon Police (AU)
8 Ford Falcon (Coke)
4 Ford Falcon Taxi (50th Anniv)
63 FJ Holden Panel Van (black)
62 Ford Falcon Taxi
51 Ford Falcon Police (EF)
64 Holden Commodore (orange)
61 Ford Falcon (AU)
11 Holden Commodore (red/white)
40 FJ Holden Panel Van (red)
54 Holden Commodore (commodore race team)
21 FJ Holden (green)
12 Ford Falcon (puma)
35 Holden commodore (police)
68 Ford Falcon (purple)
14 FJ Holden Panel Van (cream)
63 Ford Falcon (with number 75 on doors)
Of course there is also a list of the Australian Hotwheels vehicles. Unfortunately they have only made Holden Commodores, based upon the SV 5000 VN Commodore, and the VT Commodore.

Yes, castrol did do two Matchbox cars. There was the Perkins Commodore and the Longhurst Falcon. They were sold with a 4 litre Castrol GTX OIL. The sell now for around $20.00.
In regards to the Holden Ute, Matchbox did do a Holden Pick Up with two dirt bikes on the back. They also did a Holden Ruff Truck as well. The Holden Pick Up came in two colours, white with red bikes and red with yellow bikes.
The Ruff Truck was in white. Overall they sell around the $30.00 with the white pick up selling around $40.00. This one is the one to get.
These Holdens were mostly sold in the states. I suggest you start hunting around in Ebay. Thats where i have picked mine up from.....
Hope all this info helps.
Thanks everyone for the replies. Quite an interesting history to these models.
Loste Treasures, Weren't there also a limited edition pack of the Falcons and Commodores made by matchbox which were a 2 car pack with one car in plain paint scheme and the other car in a bare steel colour. I think they were packaged as Australias First or Australias Finest. Something like that.

Yes, that is correct. Matchbox produced the Commodore and Falcon in a limited release 'tube' (10,000 in total) containing two models both in silver. One was a plain looking version and the other was a slightly different version with mainly some wording down the bottom.
They were originally sold for $10.00 and havent gone up in price that much. They arent really that sought after (unless you want to complete the series). Matchbox tried to dupe the public by stating that they were a first run (or something like that).
In fact they were released way after they had actually released 4 different versions of the Commodore and Falcon.

This model has been made by Hotwheels. There is actually two types of this model. They have been based around the VT Commodore.
The first release was the blue/white one. It can fetch a price around $15.00 AUD and is the one to get.
The second one is the 'tiger' version which was designed by a Hotwheels collector. It is still available at most K-Mart stores and sells around $7.00 AUD.
Generally speaking, the Hotwheels Commodores arent as good as the Matchbox Commodores. Yes they are based on two types of Commodores (VR/VS: Matchbox VT: Hotwheels) but the Matchbox one is more accurate.

I was not really interested in any particular model. Would have liked to see what they all were.
I have a few that I have had for quite some time but unfortunately I do not have the packaging. ( I know silly thing to do...it was before I became a model addict though )

Nah,
No problems.....
Send me an email. I reply with some attachments for you to look at.....
Loste Treasures or should I say "Undercover-Male", are you selling one of your 6 Racing Team Commodores on ebay today???
It was quite funny seeing a familiar name pop up on ebay.
It made me wonder how many more of us forum contributors are registered on ebay and what their "ebay" name is.

Yes, that is me (in the flesh so to speak). I decided to sell one of the Commodore Racing Team Car (amongst others) to finance a purchase of the Biante Minicars to complete my collection.
I also have a ad in the For Sale section of the Biante Website, trying to sell some of the Matchbox/Hotwheels models i have.
I've been constantly looking at the Biante site trying to get some of the Biante Minicars but for some reason i missed out. They must be a hot item.
My user name is undercover-male but the E-Bay shop is called loste_treasures. Im not a commercial seller, just a keen model collector. I've also been recently featured in the Herald-Sun not long ago (they did a one page spread on my collecting habits with Ebay).
I try and keep the same user name. So often when dealing with people over the net you dont really know who you are dealing with.

I just put most of the Biante minicars back on site as we have had a few cancelled orders and these cars are now available.
Some models are as low as two in stock so if you are interested I suggest you hurry.

I started collecting the Holden Ruff Treks MB#58 (at least 12 major colour variations) and the Holden Pick-Ups MB#60. There are at least 20 MB#60 variations - see Charlie Macks Guide. When I get a chance I can list these if you want. The rarest is a blue one with Paris dakar on it. Then, if you want to get real serious, there are 12 different motorbikes that came on the back of MB#60 - from number 1 to 12. I have a cabinet with 46 different MB#60 and MB#58.
I am very keen to see a list of all the hot Wheels variations if someone has one. I've asked around a lot, and no-one seems to have a definitive list.

Also, forgot to say, then there are all the box and card variations...UK boxes, US Cards, Japanese boxes...etc.
I have several different available for sale if you are interested, and they are all around $30, apart from a RARE Japanese one in box for around $50. I also have a SET of 6 x Metallic red with the different bike numbers (1 to 12) for $A180. email me at terry.love@xtra.co.nz
