View Full Version : Woe to the Mnaro......

I suppose you have all heard the news that the Monaro is dead. I guess it is no surprise as it has always been anticipated by GMH that it would be an export vehicle predominantly which is what it would continue to be as the GTO.

I thought we might all just share a few moments in silence mourning the loss of this great icon and then share some of the great memories we have of this legend both in its original 60's hit classic form or the latest version that if only it was a female human most of us red blooded guys would have been happy to marry.

What struck you most about this beauty?
What will you miss the most?
What were some memories you made in one? (remember to keep it PG rated...)
etc
If you can drop your flags to half mast call a minutes' silence......:(

That suxs big time, they may continue to build them for overseas but not for Australia or New Zealand. Why HOLDEN Why if you are making them for other markets cant you continue making them for US ?

Hopefully they have a newer version based on the VE on the drawing boards then.

My wife works for Holden ( yes i know , I'am a Ford supporter, so is she) and it is not all doom ang gloom for the red brigade. Inside info is that it is only temporary due to limided capacity at the plan with the intro of 4wd and the future of VE ( i think) commodore. The New commodore chassie is designed that it is strong enough to build a large two door convertible commodore/monaro.

cheers all

I'm pretty sure holden is also still building the 2006 GTO well into 2006. It starts production soon.

I have hear the same Odin.

I have also heard that after 2006, the Monaro will be built in the states. Maybe it will be exported to Australia as a re-badged Pontiac and will be a FWD V8. We all know the yanks love the FWD cars.

Sounds like a winning formula down under.

Holden were looking at doing a sports car with the VE platform similar to the Corvette, according to a media source I cant remember. I would prefer they bring Corvette and convert it to RHD with NO badge changes and keep it as a LE in HSV showrooms. Now that would be special. Wishful thinking, though...

While I'm rather sad to hear this (I’ve always lusted for a devil CV8), I'm not really surprised considering the Gen III is unable to meet the new regulations that come in at 1/1/06.

I would expect it to return sometime in 07 (if it does) with the Gen IV as there is also talk that the current VZ ute will be on sale for up to 12months before the VE replacement is ready, suggesting that Holden are running a little late in getting all of the various models ready in time to release at the same time.

Interesting to note that it was only the Holden CV8 that has been stopped, no mention yet regarding the export GTO or HSV varieties.

For a couple of pictures of the CV8-Z click here (http://www.australiancardirectory.com.au/index.cf m?page=news_details&id=2826)

cheers. :)

ps the gold one would make a dam fine 1:18 ;)

Brad - what's this about the GEN III's? What happens with those with them already? --sorry off topic --

Ashame to see the monaro go -- again! The latest model looks sensational with the bonnet scoop and twin exhausts. Very stylish looking car.

Still hanging for a Coupe 4 model in 1/18 -- but agree the CV8-Z would be nice in 1/18.

Cam, you've got nothing to worry about, your's & mine are fine ;)

It's more about some new emission regulations (which only apply to new vehicles) which come into force next year & apparently the Gen III doesn't meet them, so I’ve read – check out LS1 for more details. Hence why we'll see the Gen IV introduced to the Holden line up (non HSV) with the VE when it arrives.

cheers. :)

Being a long term (nearly 30 years now) collector of Monaro
stuff, I've stil got everything crossed that we may
get a model of any VZ Monaro variant...
Preferably one in RedHot or Devil Yellow, but any colour
will do. Please.

Well I hate to break it to you ,but Yanks who like performance cars will take RWD any day.Ford has sold over 160,000 05 Mustangs compared to less than 15,000 GTOs.The problem is for years we have been force fed FWD cars because they are cheaper to produce.
GM has totally lost the plot. They killed the Zeta platform that was to be the base for many new RWD GM products because some genius thought they need more trucks and SUVs. I guess they haven't noticed that the dealerships are loaded with these battleships now that gas has gone over the moon here. Until they just started practically giving cars away they were drowning in unsold vehicles. They are laying off thousands of workers and closing several plants.
They also never picked up on the fact that the Germans Porsche,Mercedes,BMW, and AUDI have only or nearly all RWD cars and sell them by the truck loads. When the Japanese really started to kick Detriots ass in sales it was with tiny FWD econoboxes . So the powers that be thought that is what they want.Since MB acquired Chrysler they have been gravitating back to RWD cars. coincidence? I think not.

It looks like the worm has turned - if there is to be another Monaro, it seems that it won't be Commodore-based. In other words, we'll be 'doing a Pontiac' and borrowing the car from another GM division.

Denny Mooney, Holden's MD, has said "GM Holden would continue to investigate options for a next-generation coupe with other divisions of General Motors. Everyone at Holden is certainly committed ... ".

As for the last batch of VZs, the proposed 1,200 run of the CV8-Z just happens to be exactly twice the number of last run HX LEs made in 1976. At least Holden are thoughtful enough this time around to recognise the Monaro nameplate, which was discreetly missing from the HX LE coupe.

But, there's no burgundy metallic paint and crushed velour for the CV8-Z, or gold polycast wheels for that matter. There's one new 'hero' colour called Fusion, a chromatic orange with gold/bronze highlights, or you can choose Phantom, Turismo, Quicksilver, or Devil Yellow. Other dress-up items featured include a HBD sunroof, unique five spoke wheels, black accented bonnet nostrils, modified rear lights and badge identifications. There is also a little fiddling with interior leather colours and instrument facias. List price will remain as is, at $60,490.00.

Any predictions - will they roar out the showroom door or, as with a lot of these types of cars in the past, will their desirability only mature in twenty-plus years time ?
