Well, the circus that is F1 is off to the most boring track on the calendar this week end. Qualifying is probably as important here as it is on any track on the calendar, which is going to make things very difficult for Mark Webber and Kimi Raikkonen.
Hopefully there will be an announcement about the Williams engine supply this week. Sam Michael insists the team haven't made a decision either way, but this quote from the BMW Motorsport director sums it all up.

"We are not where we wanted to be with our partners at the moment but I hope we can improve and have some good results because we want to finish this six-year partnership on a high, not a low."
Dr Mario Theissen.

On the race front, it will be interesting to see if the low average speed of this track can bring any of the other cars closer to the Mc Laren's and Renault's. This may happen, but I think it will still come down to Alonso or Montoya barring a qualifying disaster.

I think the singularly most spectacular incident at Hungary was Mansell overtaking Senna, dspite his failings the man had balls and cheek (am I allowed to say that?)

I never liked Senna, maybe because he was opposition to Mansell, who should have been champion more than once! I also hated Schumacher at Benetton because he was a constant pest to D Hill! Now I only like Williams and Webber, and I havent got too much respect for Button and Montoya, and those other clowns who pay their way to the top, and fall to the botton like 9 pins!

Look at any of the drivers in F1 and some are better than others, but I guarantee that most of them could still punt a race car faster than you or me!
There are a lot of exceptionally good drivers in F1 at the moment. I think your comments are a little bit wide of the mark mate.

How exactly did Button and Montoya "pay their way to the top"? They were picked up by the big teams because of their skill when working the wheel. I have to agree with what Wayno said. All drivers in F1 are exceptionally talented because you don't get into a big F1 team if you are not any good.

Looks like the dusty track caught a few guys out this afternoon. Barrichello and Fisichella, Wurz, Alonso, Toyota trio Zonta, Schumacher and Trulli, Minardi’s Robert Doornbos and Christijan Albers, Mark Webber, Jacques Villeneuve and Narain Karthikeyan (twice) all had miscues of one sort or another. MS also had an electrical problem in the Ferrari after about 12 minutes of the second session that sidelined him.

Friday second practice times from the Hungaroring

1. ZONTA Toyota 1m20.409s

2. WURZ McLaren 1m20.519s

3. RAIKKONEN McLaren 1m21.281s

What a dog the Williams must be Kimi goes out first and ends up 4th on the grid Webber goes 2nd and ends up 16th 2.6 seconds slower than Kimi. Now i know that fuel may have something to do with it but 2.6 seconds !!

Oh well there is always next year for Williams

And one M.schumacher seems to be back in the running this year as he is on pole.

But how light is he?

Holden2003
30-07-2005, 08:56 PM
I dont think that Michael is that light. He was quite close to the Mclaren's in practise. It may only be 2 laps of fuel. At least the ferrari failure of success (at legitimate races) has been good for the series.

I recon he had to be pretty light considering he was almost a second faster than JPM in the McLaren. (see below)

1 1 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 1:19.882
2 10 Juan Pablo Montoya McLaren-Mercedes 1:20.779
3 16 Jarno Trulli Toyota 1:20.839

18 19 Narain Karthikeyan Jordan-Toyota 1:25.057
19 20 Robert Doornbos Minardi-Cosworth 1:25.484
20 18 Tiago Monteiro Jordan-Toyota

With Mark back there in 16th, hopefully he won't get hit from behind again

Perhaps we should start a pole of how many laps of fuel Michael had, as I think he must of been pretty light to all of a sudden have such great pace.

cheers. :)

Schumaker knows its impossible to pass on this track, so he is probably very happy the Renaults are not at the very pointy end or he would loose the drag to the first corner.

Webber is going to have another painful race. Hopefully he will survive the first corner this time. But even if his car miraculously developes some speed, he will be bottled up in a procession following the Saubers etc. The best he can hope for is a reliable race, some attrition amongst the other cars and a resonable position to qualify from in the next race.

Fuel will be the key tonight. Will be interesting to see how it all works out. If Michael is running light I feel it would be a disadvantage as when you pit you will stick yourself in the cue behind some slower cars.
Have a look at p1 and p2. Could be some first corner fireworks I'm thinking!

Maybe Bridgestone has found the winning formula and mixed up a good compound.
FERRARI has not been iddle in trying to find speed, so the possibility of having found it has to be considered.
Barrichello is also in the pointy end of the field, so the car must be fast.

brchi17

Interesting to note, that Ferrari has stated that Michael is on a 3 stop strategy.

I find this statement strange because we all know that Ferrari don’t usually disclose any information.

I wonder if they are playing down things to hide the fact that they may actually be ultra competitive for once this year.

cheers. :)

Schuey could be in a very light car and could put in some blinder early laps. When he pits and rejoins, his car will be slow and the others will be lighter and faster. So I expect it will be Schuey doing the holding up at this point. If he can get enough gap in the early part of the race he may be able to pit and rejoin in the top 4 or 5 cars then hold those poor blokes up because they can't pass on this circuit. This would help him get maybe a top 3-5 result in the end.

Webber must have had fuel in every orifice of the Williams 56 laps on the First stint goes to show how much fuel he was carrying in qualifying ! No wonder he was 2.6 sec's slower than Kimi who pitted after 11 laps.

About time Kimi had some luck. It's been a long time coming! Must feel sorry for JPM though. It was going to be pretty close between those two. Would have been interesting to see if Juan would have been asked to "help" Kimi or not.
The Mc Laren reliability record is a bit of a worry. They have the fastest cars around, but still can't crack it for a 1-2 result.
Finally we see a flinch from Alonso. The kid is human after all! No points and a big chunk out of his lead. Once he ended up back in the pack at this track it was game over. As for his team mate. You have to ask how safe is his seat for next year.
I was glad to see Michael back near the front, but the drop off in performance from the Bridgestone tyres was alarming! I hope the competitiveness he showed was not a one off. Hungry can tend to make bad cars look better than they are much like Monaco.
The Williams is still a boat anchor. Mark and Nick were steady, if unspectacular and finished about as well as they could have hoped for.
Off to a new circuit for everyone next which should be interesting. I hope Kimi can pull some more points back so we can see a good title race to the wire.

I hear there was plenty of 'drama' on the first lap.

I only taped the race so yet to watch it. I heard Klein went for a barrel roll....

Well done to McLaren on 1st possie though.

Looking forward to seeing the race from the VCR.

A Good Solid Effort from Webber, watching him on live timing he was at times matching the top 3 for pace but spent a lot of his race behind other cars.

Great win for Kimmi however if Montoya didnt have the drive shaft give up I reckon there may have been a Columbian on top of the podium if he was on a 2 stop plan.

BTW I love this 19 race season, 4 races in 5 weeks is awesome!

Cheers,

Paul.

Just checking out driver quotes and came across this from Jordan's Tiago Monteiro.

"This is another finish for me, which is good for my record and the team," said Monteiro. "The car was again very reliable. Unfortunately, we are paying the price for kamikaze drivers around us at the beginning.

The fumes coming out of his Toyota engine must be getting to him. Has he forgotten what happened just a week ago?

Its part of the problem in having racing where its very difficult to overtake. No one wants to give one inch in the first corner as it is about the only chance to make up a place on the track. And if you happen to look like loosing a place going into turn 1, its very unlikely to get it back later other than thru strategy.

Everyone becomes a desperado in turn 1 and that makes it about the most exciting part of the whole race.
