I am getting a model but want to change the paint scheme a little bit. I want to paint the bumper, spoiler, and front damper red instead of the standard silver. So I was curious if anyone has done this before.
-Did you have to sand it?
-Would airbrush be better than a standard brush
-Was it easy to maintain a gloss finish

Thanks for any help guys

I repainted a Tander car to make it a 99 winner. I sprayed oven cleaner on ALL the bits, plastic and steel (not windows, but), and sealed the car in a container overnight. I did it twice and it was heaps better than using paint stripper on the metal and nail polish remover on the plastic. Definitly airbrush it if you can.

Nice code 3 livery you are intending there rallying83 if you are thinking about repainting existing models have you thought about the many varied 1/43 rally kits out there? These will allow you to make some interesting liveries and cars which are not available otherwise- I have 2 1/43 legacy rally kits sitting waiting for the time to get built, a provence 1990 acropolis kit which i will make up in RAC colours and the 1991 RAC rothmans. I'm still to get the 1992 rothmans legacy but will in the near future. Decided to have both an swrt 97-00 (complete) collection along w/ a subaru RAC collection- there are soo many cars out there! :D

I have completely repainted several models over the years. It would be better to lightly sand or at least scuff the areas you want to paint with fine wet/dry paper. This will definitely help the new paint stick better.
I would definitely use an airbrush (or a spray can) for larger areas like a bumper. Small areas can be painted with a brush successfully, but brush strokes will be easily visible in something as large as a bumper.
The paint, if applied properly, should have a pretty good gloss to it, but if you want it to be as good as the factory paint jobs, you might want to put several coats on, let it harden for a couple of weeks and carefully use a little polish to buff it up.
