View Full Version : Targawest in Perth next week
Next week will be the first ever running of Targawest in Perth. I am not sure how much publicity there has been around this, very little I suspect.
Prologue kicks off on Thursday after midday at the AHG Driver Training Centre near the airport. The event finishes next Sunday.
For anyone interested they have a website www.targawest.com.au
I will be bringing the Monaro over for a run. So if any locals want to drop by I would love to catch up.

Steve,
I note with interest, that your regular Co-Driver won't be at your side. Your place in TargaWest will be interesting;)

I am doing it for fun and because I have never competed in Perth. They are mixing modern and classic cars so I doubt there is much chance of a strong outright result for me. I have taken a punt on tyres and ditched Mr Yokohama in favour of Michelin because they are much faster in the dry, but absolutely awful in the wet. So if it is a dry run it will be good for us. If it rains, I am toast.
Singer...Rachael isn't navigating for me because she has to stay in Singapore and look after kids etc. We are also in the middle of packing the house up for our move home. So I have Simon Vandenberg who is from Tasmania. He writes and sells the pace notes. It will be interesting to see how it all goes.

It must be a State secret, first I have heard of it. Hopefully I won't be working and can be on site at the racecourse road caravan park (where my girlfriend lives) to watch all the machinery roar past. I've been up and down that road heaps of times in four different vehicles and it is a good choice for a targa event. I'd love the chance to fang my Torana up that road knowing there is no oncoming traffic.
If I'm there I will look out for your Monaro Steve and try to say goodaye.

Hope you have a good and safe run Steve. Give the fans something to talk about! ;)
Seeing it has been a state secret I will have to wake everybody up. Just aswell I left the exhaust at home and will only be running a megaphone.

If you squint very carefully there are 8 words about it in the Sunday Times motoring section. Dont blink as you will miss it.

Steve,
No offence was intended just an observation. Blooding a new navigator can have its hairy momements.
I hope all goes well for you both.
With regard to the move, I realise that the movement of an entire household to another country requires a good person for the deal of logistical nightmares
I look forward to updates re your position in Targawest
Cheers,

Great, the more hairy moments the better value for money you get in this game. Thats what us weekend warriors do it for :-)
I went and looked at 3 stages this morning. I think there were about 6 corners in total. So not much need for a nav really. I think the speeds will be very high. One of the stages I looked at will have 8 chicanes to slow the cars.

Steve,
Have a ball. We will be following your progress with interest.
No exhaust only a megaphone, now that is what a V8 is all about.
Hope you have a safe targa and keep that 'Orange Monster' on the black stuff.
Good luck..

Hi Steve,
Hope you have been able to find a tyre outlet as the slicks may not be very useful with the current weather. We hope it fines up for the weekend.
As for publicity, WHAT PUBLICITY? We have known of the event for many months but there is a complete lack of detail and the public would have little or no knowledge.
A number of motoring editors in WA papers - they could have got hold of this event - as the Tasmanians do - and actually put something of interest in their newspapers, rather than just ads and downloads from the web.

I drove around one of the roads to be used on the sunday and its not overly exciting, pity they aren't using the racecourse road from the bottom, up and past the racecourse itself, that road is a beauty - tight corners and a couple of nice crests.
As far as publicity goes our local road nazi's and the Minister (politician) concerned are probably having kittens just thinking about someone having fun on our roads. The less publicity the better as far as they are concerned. They will probably spend the whole weekend tutt tutting about "hoonery" and trying to work out how to put a stop to something like this happening again.
Western Australia, the state of excitement, NOT, on our roads.
I have had a look at the prologue stage at the Perth Driver training centre near the International Airport and I can tell you that will be fantastic. We will burn a set of rear tyres there alone I reckon.
As for the publicity, I don't know why it has been low key. But I think it will be a good fun event anyway.

Bev, Richard, Graeme and myself went out to the AHG centre for a look. The weather, well, it was wet but that just made it more interesting.
Managed to take some photos.

Nice logo on the boot lid there ;)
So Steve, did you end up running the Michelin's or did you carry a few spare Yoko's over in case as it looks a bit wet judging from John's pictures.
cheers. :)

It bucketed down and I was running the Michelin's. They are as close to slick tyres as you can get and still run on the road. So I had to go cautious to get around without falling off.
Hoping to get some sunshine tomorrow so I can lay into it a bit more.

I see Steves in front after day 1:D
Classics (http://www.targawest.com.au/results/competition/C LS05_RESULTSAFTERSTAGE_SS08.PDF)
the crowds don't look too bad, either.
Day 1 was ok for us although we started slowly. Had a brake problem, new pads that wouldn't bed in properly, that affected me in the first few stages. I got a huge lock up at Wanaroo which flat spotted a tyre down to the canvas.
I was also a bit rusty not having done a stage since Targa Tasmania in April. But after lunch it started to come together and we were quicker. Looking forward to tomorrow now.
We are 1st in classic and 4th outright (including classic and modern). So we'll see if we can hang on to that tomorrow.

Steve,
I hope the Camera is working as the footage from TargaWest will make for good viewing, especially for those of us who are unable to go WEST
Go TargaWest, Go Steve, Go Monaro. In other words, Go, Go Go, & Burn that Rubber
I hope that all goes well during the rest of the event.

Great stuff Steve. Good luck and I hope you can keep it up.
Keep the rubber side down and enjoy mate! ;)
Wow, this rally is fast. I have never driven the car so hard over so many stages bouncing the tacho of the redline in 4th and 5th before. There are many times we are hitting 240-250km/h which is very fast in an HQ Holden on a back road. Some of the stages have been recently resurfaced (like last week) so there are kilometres of blue metal which adds a lot of spice to it.
Just got to keep it all together for one more day.

Yes we finished ok in the end winning the classic catagory and 5th including moderns. I think we could have finished as high as 3rd overall including the moderns if it weren't for a carburettor problem that was troubling me the whole rally. It started as a small problem but developed into something much worse by the final day. We were lucky to even get through the last 3 stages on a car that could not idle at all below 4000rpm, and choked on massive over fueling above that. It turned out to be a whole in the float bowl.
The rally itself was exellent. The organisers ran a very tight event. The roads seem unexciting at 100km/h but I can tell you they certainly liven up at 230km/h. it was a whole new experience for me tackling so many stages one after another at these speeds. I loved it.
I'll certainly be back for another go.
I have quite a lot of in car footage. So my intention is to get the TV footage from the camera crew and merge with my in car quite quickly. Fingers crossed.

That's great news. I was interested to hear how you found the first running of the event, and how it stacked up against some of the other events you've taken part in, so it's encouraging to hear a positive report.
I managed to get to the prologue on Thursday and, despite (or maybe because of) the horizontal rain not long before your run, the crowd was pretty impressed by the way the big orange HQ broke into wheelspin halfway down each of the straights, although I think a few were dissappointed you weren't able to hang the tail out as much as you (we) would like.
I also caught the Hartley Estate Short and Bindoon Country stages on Saturday and, while the spectator crowds numbers were probably relatively low, it's safe to say your runs were by far the most popular!
The other car I was pretty keen to see was Keith Callinan in the De Tomaso Pantera but I believe he was out fairly early on Day One of the event. :(

Yes I didn't hang the tail out too much in the prologue because the road was very narrow and if I put a wheel on the grass in those conditions it would have been all over. In hindsight I was a bit of a *****. I did hang it out a bit more during the stages on day 1, 2 and 3 though.
KC broke a diff in his Pantera on day one. Him and I discussed coming back next year bring his HK munro and my HQ. We are using both these cars in the Winton 6 hour next month.
The event ran very smoothly which is a credit to the organisers. But it was only about 70 entrants, so a bit easier to run smoothly than Targa Tas and Classic Adelaide where there are 300 competitors.

Is there any way of getting a copy once you sort all that out, Steve. I believe I would not be the only one interested...;)
Do you sell them on your website??
(Best I go have a look, I think)
Once I get the DVD done, I'll send you a copy for free.
