From next year NO sporting event will get an exemption...So everybody gets the consistency they want!

Seriously though, the GP brings millions of dollars to the state...how much money does a few models bring?

...and before all the skeptics come out, since cigarette advertising was banned in the UK, the companies now sell 30-40% less (can't remember the exact number) ciggies in Britain.

Cheers

It's interesting this one isn't it! Wasn't it the ciggie advertising that originally caused Ph Island to lose the bikes to Eastern Creek due to the then Cain Governments stand on the issue.

Only now, 15 odd years later, are we seeing the exemption for F1 removed! It's amazing how much effect the $$ has on political ethics:rolleyes:

I guess a plus was Australia got another track created with the bikes moving to Sydney!

More interesting when during the 90s ciggy advertising was allowed in rally as long as anti-tobacco ads were also applied....pictures of Subarus w/ 555 and warning smoking kills livery still make me laugh

Hi again to all ,

Ciggy advertising as i understand is banned on models as they come under the category of toys and as the powers to be [ rightly so ] don't want our children influenced by this.
i have quite often thought why do we support cigarette advertising for the F1 when in some other countries it is banned, maybe they have more intestinal fortidude than we here in australia do.
on the other hand why are more movies showing increased smoking scenes ?eg Alfie to name just one, and there are many others wonder who is footing the bills.
I would have loved my models to come with the high quality tampo decals instead of the after market but at least we have a choice to have decals or not and if this prevents someone young from being influenced by the tobacco companies i am happy ,as i don't wish them to follow in my steps an ex smoker 55 a day and now badly affected by passive smoke.

if you are a smoker please consider others when smoking in the door ways of buildings and in public areas even thou you are in the open smoke does carry.
they say ex smokers are the worse at complaining ,
no it is when i wake in the morning coughing up the muck again just like i used to when i was smoking just because i was subjected to passive smoke and i gave up 14 years ago.

This was one of the reasons, but knowing the politics of how therse things work it wasn't the only one I'm betting.
All very well for us to remove tobacco advertising from our sporting events, but the attitude to this issue in countries like Spain and a lot of Asian countries mean tobacco advertising will still be around in f1 for quite a while I think.
Can you see Bernie seriously closing the door to this market unless he is forced to?

I'm not going to get into the rights and wrongs of tobacco sponsorship but as a non smoker I was quite happy for them to sponsor my sport. You can just see the next target will be alcohol. But history can't be rewritten. A model of an MHDT Holden without Marlboro in the livery is just a red & white Holden.

To be honest this is the sort of hypocritical approach we have come to expect from the powers that be in this country. On the one hand they will remove the right to allow companies to advertise their LEGAL products on Formula one and MotoGp team liveries while on the other they are happy to reap the rewards of the taxes they collect from smokers. Added to that is the windfall in added revenue whenever one of these events is held in this country and you can see why a true cynic would suggest the government is merely paying lip service to the anti-smoking lobby with their actions.

The cigarette companies wont take long to convince both of these International sporting events that it is in their best interests to simply boycott ANY country that is not playing fair. You could hardly blame them as they are NOT advertising illegal wares. There are still plenty of countries who will take up the offer. Sure, these countries may not have the political infrastructure of countries such as ours, but have no doubt, they probably sell more of their products in these areas because of this fact.

If you take the emotion out of the debate it makes it even more ridiculous. Surely if a country such as ours was truely serious they would not even allow the cars to carry the same paint schemes. At what age can a child work out that the red and white car they saw at Albert Park is in fact the Marlboro car on page three of dads auto racing magazine.

I have a collection of MotoGP bikes and the first thing my 10 year old nephew noticed was that the yellow bike has the name Biaggi on the side inside of the usual Camel sticker. Are the do-gooders really convinced this is the best way to combat youngsters from taking up smoking. If so I cant wait to see how they tackle the drinking problems in years to come.

Well; speed limits;, speed is not the problem so much as is driver error-not being able to drive propperly.
the modern cars are capable, but the nuts behind the wheel are way loose.
Almost everybody speeds (I.E. break the law) at some time of their journey.
Anti Drug laws;, Not effective enough, the country is litteraly awash with this stuff.
Gun laws; The new gunlaws have taken mostly guns away from law abiding people, and the illegal guns are still very much arround with the scummo's that had/have them in the first place.
The country is still awash with illegal fire arms every where!
Anti tobaco advertising laws; A joke, post above stated it very well.
