I was looking for advice from seasonal model collectors. I am looking to collect the new Torana A9X 1979 model when released next month. As the car does not come with the cigerette advertising I have found the web site that does supply the missing decals, however there are three types to choose from. Water slide, Digi print or cut out vinyl. For any collector who has altered their 1978 model could they supply the best advise to which decal is appropriate.
Much appreciated in advance. Coops.

yes i have to agree, digi-print are the way to go, Bert (ferrari fan) recomended it to me- if you want to see a version of the 78 Torana click on the link in my signiture-it should be in their somewhere- or look at the pics on www.missingdecals.com (http://www.missingdecals.com)
also welcome cooper1117 to the wonderful world of the Biante forum and it's "moneywasters" (as i am some times called)

Thanks Tony - Appreciate the feedback. I was a bit lost and really want the car to look "right". I knew the water slide would be a bit dodgy but was unsure of the other two options.

Be aware that the decals for the 1979 model do have an extra decal for the helmet of the figurine with it.
The decals of the 1978 does NOT have them.

Yes, slice them with a very sharp knife.
When applying decals preparation is the key, have ALL the gear you might need arround you, then it is easy.

Welcome to the forum
Depends on your level of skill and personal opinion...
I personnaly have the digi-vinyl. By far the easiest to apply...I had 5-6 goes with one of them:eek: From a distance they are great. Up close (like cm's) there is a small amount of pixilation...those who can't see the detail on 1:43 need not worry as they wouldn't be able to see the pixilation anyway;)
Other models I have the normal cut-out letter vinyl decals...they do not suffer from pixilation, require a small amount of detergent to apply (to allow slip between the model and decal) but once they grab, are a throw away item if not in the correct position...
I find the water slide decals the most difficult to apply due to tearing...they can have issues with colour "bleed through" but this is not an issue with the HDT cars...
I hope this helps you decide.

I've used both & Found the vinyl ones to be more 'user friendly'.

The model should be out shortly and all hell will break loose as all of a sudden every one wants them.
They are avilable NOW so you have them already when you get the model.
It makes it a little bit easier for me somehow.
I am waiting for the Wayne Gardner bike to come out and am thinking if there would be sufficient demand for an decal set for this model.
This was an Australian driver 500cc World Champion bike and with all the future model machines of Michael Doohan etc will be a nice collection topic.

Thanks to all those who gave me advice, much appreciated. It was worth joining the forum to get the advice. I have already sent off the post today to missingdecals in WA for a set of 79 decals so I will be ready once I pick up the car.
Thanks to all.

Yes ,on the front bonnet is a decal missing above "team of champions"
It is very small and is just a small detail that can be added.

Hello Everyone.
That would be right. last week I asked around work from model builders as to what was the best type of transfer to get out of Bert's choices. All said the water slide would be best, so I sent over my order for a waterslide set for the 78 and 79 A9X, and also the Red Roo and Cobra models (but these latter two were vinyl)..........DOH!!
Now you have me worried I'll end up with awful cig decals falling apart on the car, sigh.
Are the waterslides really that bad? Or just fiddly to put on?

The Waterslide deals are very fiddly as well as being easily torn (in my experience) I have used both & you can hardly tell the difference

Oh well, live and learn I suppose.

Yours are in the mail back to you and literarly hundreds of waterslides have been applied with great succes.
The 2 little separate decals for the helmet are digi print, just peel off and apply.
In a waterslide these would be more difficult to apply due to the figurine being in the model.

Seasoned model builders are always working with waterslide decals and most if not all have never seen the digi decals I have developed to make it easier for the "novice"
Let a seasoned modeller apply your decals and the result should be outstanding.

Nobes, my reference was just to them being difficult to apply. I'm forever folding them in half, tearing etc during application:eek: When I get (eventually) get them on, they look great and are very durable.
The Red Roo model has to be vinyl due to the dark base colour of the model. The blue would "bleed" through a waterslide decal.
Singer, I can spot the difference...but give me a few more years at the rate my eyes are deteorating and I won't;)

Well I applied the Camel Filters and Marlboro vinyl decals to the Cobra and Red Roo no problems.
Got out the 78 A9X 05 and decided to give it ago (brushing off the cobwebs of my former (30 years ago) model decal applying abilities) and didn't do too bad.
Decided to do the bonnet first, and promptly had the decal break in three! LOL
Unperturbed I carefully manouevred all the bits together and using a scalpal, trimmed the parts overhanging the bonnet opening to allow it to open.
Flushed with success I decided to do the sides. But rather than try and apply the whole decal, I measured and cut it in three after reviewing pictures of both sides of the actual car in my books. For the right hand side I cut between the decal as follows Ma...rlb ...oro for both sides and applied on the right the Ma first (fits nicely just to the door opening) then the rlb (cutting the top of the lb to fit over the door handle) then the oro.
Left hand side applied the oro , then as above.
I have chickened out on doing the rear decal at this stage as the white number plate and how to place and shape the centre of the decal has me a bit stumped.
No doubt the vinyl ones are easire to apply, but this info might be useful for those others getting the 79 A9X 05.

Thanks for the update, however as I found with the A9X it was definately trial & error when it came to placement then leaving it when I was happy.

Yes I to felt the urge to try and fiddle with the waterslide decal to get it absolutely right, but resisted as I was worried I'd split the decal.
I am very happy with the result though. But still mulling over the boot decal placement. Did you put the rear decal on Singer? If so any hints as to how you went about it?

The waterslides are fiddly I admit, but once on do look very good. I agree vinyl is easier.
Why don't you have a go on the 88 Sierra? I was a bit reluctant to do the decals on the A9X, but did OK if I do say so myself. Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.

Shame to have spent the money and not use the decals, but as you say, you like the vinyl look.
One of the advantages of the waterslides is that they can be shaped into the bumps curves of the car body (like around the door handles and number plates) better than vinyl.
I am going to order some vinyl ones for the 79 A9X though, as I think the application of them on the bonnet and sides will be easier.

As I can only use one hand due to a stroke, I cut the boot Decal to size put it in some warm soapy water then I fiddled until I got the placement right. In regard to the larger Decals, I tore the W/S ones so I got some Digi Vinyl ones to place on the sides & on the Bonnet.
As I said earlier, I challenge any one to tell the difference (from a reasonale distance without the aid of a Magnifying glass)
I am very happy with the quality of FF's decals:)
