Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how often Toddler and Rick say "to be honest" ?

To be honest, its quite funny once you become aware of it !!!!

To be honest, id like to see the Walky boys continue on their merry way today at the Valley, but to be honest they prolly will ... to be honest of course !!!!

They'll grow out of it! Malcolm Wilson (now Ford rally manager) used to say "I mean..." everywhere there was a verbal comma during interviews. "I mean, the car was performing very well, I mean, but we had trouble with the gear ratios, I mean..." etc. There's quite a few sports stars who say "Look..." at the start of every reply to an interviewer. I think it must be a hard habit to break when it's done unconsciously.

Or footballers (AFL) who say, "Yeah, nah, the boys pulled together today..." when answering something. Well either it is a "yes", or a "no".

SUBconsciously it would be a hard habit to break. UNconsciously it would be almost impossible.:D

I wish I was talentless and could have two Bathurst victories and a touring car championship under my belt.
Fair enough if you think he has an ego problem. That's your opinion and I have no problems with that. But saying he's talentless is a bit much in my opinion.

I mean, at the end of the day, you can only take it one post at a time. Everyone pulled together and it was the whole team. To be honest, Rick's where he is because he's very fast and consistent.

If he's not the most exciting bloke in the world, so what?

Alan Jones and Darrell Eastlake both say "I mean" a lot. Glenn Seton got the nickname 'Sunset' for saying "at the end of the day" too much.

Michael Schumacher is another who says "to be honest" a great deal. I just say "um" far too much. Phrases or noises like that give you a chance to think - at the end of the day, to be honest, it's better to stop and think, but that's, um, hard to do.

I think most of the forum have dissed you enough sad. However, how does a driver with no talent finish 15 of 17 races this year on the podium and finshes the remaining 2 races 4th? Remember he earned seats in HYL & Kmart long before his parents took over Kmart.

Ricks problem, as the commentators stated it today is that he hasn't won races and poles. No one remembers they guy who comes second, therefore Rick is often overlooked. Its only a matter of a few tenths that separates Rick from Pole and a few more race wins.

Back to the thread. Another phrase that used to annoy me was Mark Skaife who often says 'happy hunting ground'. He doesn't say it as much now as he used to.

Well I dont think that, I just marvell at his ability to be consistant at acumalating points and has every chance of winning a second championship, now if he can do that he will shut everyone up!

Who cares if he is a Brock type? I want to Remember Rick Kelly for being Rick Kelly, not being like Brock. The same goes for any other sportsman. Everyone is an individual and should be remembered for who they are, not who they were like.

Then I heard Steven Richards do it. To be honest, it was doing my head in.

Doing something unconsciously is doing it without awareness of it. You don't actually have to be unconscious to do it!

Over the years, many drivers have appeared to let another specific driver past when they are behind them...I remember when Tander was younger he'd always fall off the road when Lowndes got behind him, Rick used to do it with Ingall (although Ingall did help sometimes;))...Once these drivers gain confidence in their own abilities, they no longer have that problem...Rick and Garth can now race with anybody!

my favs in the 90s were
"you got to take the good with the bad" by a former hard charging sometime Ralt RT4 driver who's luck eludes him @ Bathurst

and "thats the game we play" by Peter Dane's old sparring partner in the Laser days ;)

The most common thing that most sportspeople, especially over here in NZ seem to always slip into interviews is "you know". It becomes really annoying when you listen out for it and keeps popping up.

Oh, so true. I would love to hear a reporter come back with.
"Well, actually we dont know, thats why I asked you the question."

It must be hard to come up with something fresh every time someone sticks a microphone in front of your face.

My pet hate is journalists or sports people or anyone else being interviewed who never answer a question with a "yes" but answer "absolutely". Or if they are from Malbourne they answer "ebsolutely."
