View Full Version : Just thinking....

I was thinking the other day.... with what i spend on Biante models each week, i could use that money to upgrade to a CV8 (a real one, not 1:18) from my current 4cyl buzz box.

And, if i sold off my current collection, id be able to fit a CAPA supercharger (350kw) to it.

Interesting huh??

But, whats the use of being a model collector if you cant collect models? Waddaya think??

Yeah, my wife freaked me out the other day by casually announcing that there was at least $1000-00 worth of 1/43 (only) models on my shelves. Fortunately, I was able to point out that at least half of those were gifts, as I'm otherwise impossible to buy for. She wasn't having a go, just stirring, as she's actually responsible for getting me into collecting!

Thinking of the future, and purely from an investment point of view, if you were to look at your CV8 in 2010, what would it be worth in comparison to your diecast collection ?

There again, is your house big enough to accomodate ten year's worth of diecast collectables ?

Actually Perry, you hit the nail on the head..... what's the point of being a collector, with no collection ?

Exactly. My missus loves collecting Star Trek stuff, which was cool, until i started spending four times what she does on my hobby.

Which is better: Having one real dream car (my dream car), or having a hundred model dream cars???

Greame, my house isnt big enough for my current collection!

good call perry. all my friends agree that while my collection of awesome cars looks fantastic, as a kid saving for a car, i spend waaayy too much money on models, as my friends very often tell me! but hey, i figure its easier to look at heaps of fantastic model cars and drive one awesome car, than it is to drive heaps of awesome cars, and look at one fantastic model car!

You want to know the ironic thing?? I was drooling over Trevor's (admin) CV8 at the GM Owners Day, when i said to a mate "I wonder which bits of this car i paid for".

Well i thought it was pretty funny until i started to think about it.

You know, Perry, I wasn't thinking anything even remotely like that when I was gawking at Trevor's Monaro. Possibly because it's not a true question, being based on a false premise as it is.

I think that Graeme has made a very valid statement in pointing out that in ten years time our model collections will have appreciated (possibly ahead of inflation), whilst most ordinary road vehicles will have depreciated invalue.

It's a balance between a love of the models (and hence being a collector) and justifying the expenditure and investment.

It's a totally different decision from purchasing your every day road car. For most people it's simply viewed as a necessary cost. For some of us, our cars are an extension of character, an asset not merely based upon cost or economic evaluation.

My Gran has always said, If you want it bad enough, you will find a way.....

How you go about paying for the dream is a personal matter. I wish Trevor well in his business and am happy to see a successful Australian enjoy the fruits of his labours.

I mean no critisism of Perry or anyone else with this post. I just happen to think that economic rationalisation should be kept totally separate from pleasurable activities.
:)

By the way, I did happen to take a nice digital photo of the CV8 yesterday. I will post it tomorrow if any non-residents would like to see it.

My girlfriend said the same thing when she stumbled upon my database of cars, in which I had tallied the cost of purchasing & the cost of replacing the lot. She thought that for the $8,500+ (for purchasing them all) that I have spent, it could buy that ride on-mower that I (we) want for our block. So I told her she was 'dreaming' & coped a blow to the head for my troubles !!!
I think one of us has a lot to learn about diecast & its' not me !!!
Good thing she doesn't know about this forum,
Cheers.

It's not worth having a nice real car these days anyway. I had a really nice KF Ford Laser TX3, lots of money spent on it, a real clean car. 5 months after purchase, the car had been broken into once a month at least, the stereo stolen, then they finally got the whole car. After that experience, I can't justify spending that much on a car anymore. Now I drive another TX3, but almost standard. I have had new suspension work, and that's about it, all my money that would have gone on the car in the past, has gone into lots of little ones!!!!

I have no regrets what so ever by contracting carcollectingitis. Sometimes I look back and wonder what else I could have spent the money on, but I know when my Kids turn Twenty One They will have an Investment for their future.
Thanks Biante for a 'Great Nest Egg'. A least I can watch it grow before my eyes.

I don't mind the cost involved of the collecting, I just worry if one day I come home to find my kids playing "smash up derby" with them out the back yard. I don't have any children yet, but it kills me just thinking about it.

I have so far managed to stay in reasonable limits by collecting only the cars of certain drivers, but with so many interesting options to choose from... well... It's like Perry said - whats the use of being a model collector if you can't collect models? :D

You will have to tell your girlfriend that by the time you build your house - and included an oversize room to place all of your models you won't need the ride on mower.

Grubby,
ah what a laugh !!!
Funny that you say that, as we've got differing opinions at to the size of MY shed & MY study.
As for covering the whole block, we've 2 acres of land - you should see the size of the shed I want !!!!
On one of the house plans we were looking at, I changed the name of the rumpus room to 'Brad's Model Car Display Room' & instantly she said that we didn't need a rumpus room.
All I can say is that I'm persistant & if the cars arn't allowed in the house, then there'll be a bloody big shed to house them all. And the ride on mower of course !!!!
cheers.

After adding up what my collection has cost so far and thinking about what sort of cabinet i'm going to need to put them in, i started think how many more models can there be? How big will the cabinet have to be? How much more money will i need?

anyone have any thoughts?
