You must have been in a car show then, Villeneuve. I saw a Corvette Z06 in a South Yarra showroom a couple of weeks ago, and a 1973 Vette in that new Port Melbourne showroon where they house all the limo Hummers!

Excluding car shows and things like Classic Adelaide! On the road at different times (mostly 1980s and 1990s) I've been lucky enough to see: Jaguar XJ220, Jaguar XJR-15, BMW M1, Walkinshaw VL prototype, D Type Jaguar, Ford GT40, MG Metro 6R4, Audi quattro sport, the original Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, and probably a few others that haven't come to mind yet. Mostly one-offs or very limited run cars. Oh yes, and the sole Falcon Cobra in the UK. Saw that several times.

lol so do you live here or in the UK???
Nick Short
20-10-2007, 03:38 PM
Most of the sightings were in the UK, but I live here now. If you include things like the RAC Rally and Goodwood FoS then there are hundreds of rarities, but I was only including random chance sightings on the road. Can't think what the rarest car I've seen over here is, apart from during motorsport events or shows. I'd have killed to have seen the Rothmans Porsches driving on the road over here, or any of Alan Hamilton's racing Porsches on the road......

When I lived in Tassie, I saw various cars on the road of interest that were participating in Targa Tasmania.
Things like De Tomaso Pantera's..........to an Oakland 8
Up on the GC i've seen an E-type, a Ferrari F430, quite a lot of Porsches's...........And an old 1920's Mercedes Benz.......can't remember the model

Yeah, they were in showrooms. From what i've been told, non of them are road legal, but the McLaren does appear on inner city streets sometimes.

Years ago a guy who lives near me used to take his McLaren F1 out for a thrash in the wee hours of the morning, it's the strangest thing seeing one of them screaming down the road at 3am in suburban Sydney

The most unusual encounter for me was back in 1981/82, whilst driving home in my E Type Jag in the Perth suburb of Mt Pleasant. I was driving along the riverfront road called The Esplanade and as I went around Deep Water Point - a local swimming and boating place on the Canning River - I spotted amongst the boat trailers what looked like a D Type Jag ... pretty much thought I was dreaming, but turned off to find that one of Peter Briggs mechanics had decided to drop in on friends who were out for a water-ski.
The car was an unflattering shade of light blue ... chassis XKD545, which had spent most of its life in the US and Canada before being purchased by Briggs in 1980. I had seen Briggs' lightweight E Type at the York Motor Museum, but at the time didn't know of the existence of a D Type in his collection ... but to see one at a suburban Perth boat ramp was definitely something extraordinary.

Graeme - I was driving down Glen Osmond road in Adelaide early - ie 6am - one Saturday morning a month or so ago ... I pulled up at the lights on the corner of Glen Osmond and Fullarton rd and there sitting at the lights just about to take off the other way was a D Type Jag with a guy driving it all kitted out in "biggles" goggles !! .. It was British racing green .. don;t know if it was a genuine one or a replica but it certainly made me look twice and definitely not the car you expect to see on the roads these days ..
Graeme
20-10-2007, 08:30 PM
Buff,
There are a few replica C Types, D Types and XJ13s getting around these days, some more realistic than others.
Here's an amusing link to YouTube footage of a real D Type in the hands of Mike Hawthorn :

The D Type was an fantastic car ! I wish I had been able to see some of the Historic Events a few years ago when Win Percy was sliding a D Type around a racetrack !

Parked outside the local pub one Saturday was a Ferrari. So what everyone says. Well this was red (of course) with yellow wheels and the styling was a late 50's early 60's racing car. Locally registered back in the 80s, but I have never seen it at any of the display days or in the Classic. Can't even tell you what model it was. Also XJ220 on the freeway, BMW M1 etc etc etc
Nick Short

If it was definitely a Ferrari, ie you saw a badge and it wasn't a kit car, it could be a 206SP. They had yellow wheels, but they're very rare and I don't know if any made it to Oz.

Ferrari badges on either side front 1/4 panels. Sort of like a 250 Testa Rossa but I didn't have a camera so I can't confirm.

Not a 206, didn't have the enclosed cockpit and definately not a Stratos. I knows a Stratos when I sees one. These were a pressed or welded steel rim certainly not the yellow stratos style.

I figured you probably knew a Stratos, but I was trying to think of a car that would have both the yellow wheels and the Ferrari badges. Yellow wheels weren't usual even on racing Ferraris. Were they actually yellow or gold?

There were a heap of cars out yesterday. The local Sporting Car club had a run. Expecting 300 cars to be in it. If there were 300 cars then by my estimation 200 were Caterham/Lotus 7 look alikes. A smattering of Ferraris, older Porches, old and new Astons Audi R8 and one that looked and sounded like a 1930s Bugatti racer! Oh and some other rubbish such as XW, XY GT Falcons ;)

Hi again to all,
just returned to Perth after a week in KUL whilst there we were just about to cross a busy road , when there was the sound of many sirens firstly two police cars loudspeakers blaring. followed by many police bikes stopping all traffic , then a police and body guard motorcade passed by they were surrounding a real flash black bentley mulsanne turbo at speed.
only the king going somewhere the chap on the side walk told us.
this scene was repeated daily whenever the king or sultan or dignitary chose to travel

Then they'll know how to make better than the Mustang, by looking at it's quality.
Also did anyone notice that one of the Mustangs was a convertible.....................

Not so much build quality as dynamics, ie road holding etc. Remember their main market is the USA and the Mustang will be a major competitor. Why else would 2 Mustangs with very close plates and one that is a left hand drive be parked next to them. Too big a co-incidence.

Agreed, if it looked remotely like a Commodore then I feel it could wear the Monaro badge, but as it's nothing like it, I think it would be rather contemptuous if they were to try and sell it as something other than what it is.
I must admit while I love the outside of it, I am rather unsure about the interior...

It had a 2.8L PRV (Peugeot, Renault, Volvo) V6, was claimed to do 0-60MPH in 8.8 sec's, but a magazine found it would do it in 10.5 sec's

Saw the new Nissan Skyline GT-R in the metal last night. I could handle one but for some reason the pictures just don't look like the real life item. The bonnet looks a lot higher than the photos. Also someone forgot to design the rear end and if you got hit in the back? BIG $, its almost flat, so bumper, lights, boot lid and even the well set back wheels are in danger of getting wiped out. Looks fast sitting still in a PS3 sort of way.

If they were full production models that I was sitting in last night they felt very flimsy, especially compared to the Mondeos on display right next to them. Honestly the way that the doors felt was very cheap and tinny. I was really expecting better.

Spot on mate, but that's changed now ;) I saw a XR8 on display today at Farm World & in bright orange it was hard not to stop & look at. Yet at the same time I felt it was a little understated.....I still think that from 100m it may be hard to pick from the FG from BF.
For me it just doesn't appear aggressive enough, but inside I did see a marked improvement from BF. The only down side (in my opinion) was that it was parked near a new XR5T Mondeo & FG looked rather 2nd rate compared to it. It left me questioning if Ford having the Mondeo is a good thing as I can see it steeling customers away from the Falcon, the interior was something from left field & I really liked it.

They both look to be of the same size too, similar styling....I wonder what an everyday person thinks of the two?
If car fans can't tell the difference at first glance, how are normal people going to?
Don't like Fords new names either...I don' really know whats what anymore

to be honest i dont even really like the new FPVs. my dad had two ba xr8s which i really liked and thought were fantastic cars..but for some reason the FG has put me off. i don't really like the look of it and the interior isnt too special
my opinion anyway...
Cheers

I drove past a few Ford dealers on the way to Coffs Harbour today and kept looking at the new Falcon and as some one who didnt mind the look of the BA/BF variant i have to say the FG is ugly.
In certain colours the it looks like a parts bin special as there are no constant lines, mainly silver the car has way to many angles and stops in crease lines leading no where.
Back on thread saw a few nice cars being driven up and down the coast road mainly Jags and Hot rods i would think heading for the Winter Sun festival in Cooloongatta. Any one on the Gold Coast if you havent been to Winter Sun go as its a great event with some very nice 50's/60's cars and rods there.

Exactly the problem I had when I saw a new base model Falcon (not sure of the new name for the base model or if it's still an XT:confused:) that was parked on the street Friday. From the front it got me wondering if it was the new model or the last BF update & it wasn't until I walked past the car that I noticed the differences in the doors & rear end treatment, so I knew it was the new model.....:o
.....If car fans can't tell the difference at first glance, how are normal people going to?....
I think this might be the biggest problem will Ford will be facing in trying to sell this new model, that said I wish them well & hope for Ford that it really is a good car.

I thought the VE's were **** when they came out, and thought ford might actually have a way better looking car which would sell well, but the are CRAP. i hate standard VE's but love the HSV models, but i hate all the new ford models, and im a ford fan

Seeing them at the Adelaide Motorshow I thought that they were too similar as well tho' the Mondeo is far better made). Is this deliberate so that if the new Falcon is a sales failure the Mondeo can take over? If it looks the same then mug punters may think that its the same?

Infiniti Q35 (?) Had the Infiniti badge on the front and it was a coupe. I didn't think that they were selling them here and its a pretty new model for an import (I think). Didn't do much for me, a very soft looking car like the Lexus coupe.

Nothing exactly special, but a GMC Sierra (kinda like a F Series Ford pick-up)
Huge thing it was, and the noise that came out the exhaust pipe (looked stock to me) was phenominal.
Dunno how they can afford to run it!

espically with the current fuel prices at $1:70 it would cost over $100 a week in fuel.

Petrol's 1.50-60 on the GC... so not quite as dear as you guys....but it would still drink it like no tomorrow
Didn't notice any LPG stickers on the number plate.......and sure wasn't a diesel....so I'm assuming it ran on petrol

While driving around today I saw an FE or FC ute, nothing really out of the ordinary except it's a bit of a rarity to see on the roads today even more so the fact it was left hand drive. Were these converted to LHD and exported or is it some kind of freak :freak:

It was definately LHD, I was sitting behind it for a good 3 or 4 K's, until I overtook it and the steering wheel was definately on the left hand side and the fact there was only one person in it and they were driving it from the wrong side was a giveaway.
